Chronicles

Annual time-lapse movies of growth and drought stress

The chronicle of tree growth and water deficit at TreeNet sites are presented in a clip with a daily resolution for each year.

The top map shows site-specific growth performance of a specific year compared to average historical data (2011-2020) for a site. Data are classified as “high” growth (dark green), “above average” growth (green), “below average” growth (light green), and “poor” growth (yellow). Sites with primarily dormant trees are shown in gray.

The bottom map shows the site water deficit (drought stress) of trees at the indicated time compared to the average historical data (2011-2020) for a site. The data are categorized as “low water deficit” (dark blue), “below average” water deficit (light blue), “above average” water deficit (orange), and “high” water deficit (red). When the temperature drops below zero, this can trigger the so-called frost shrinkage of the stem, which is marked with an asterisk.

TreeNet Switzerland collects continuous data on stem radius fluctuations measured with point dendrometers from trees all over Switzerland and estimates drought and growth indicators for Swiss forest ecosystems. We closely collaborate with the Long-term Forest Ecosystem Research Programme (LWF/WSL), the ETHZ, the Institute for Applied Plant Biology (IAP), and the University of Basel.
